MerlotWith its soft, supple and fruity flavours, Merlot is one of the world’s most popular red wine styles, yet is only now gaining in popularity in Australia. A major component of Bordeaux wines, the Merlot grape is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and occasionally Shiraz. However, with increasing demand for alternative red wine styles, Australian winemakers have recently been more willing to try Merlot as a stand-alone. Tasting NotesDeep violet in colour with masses of red berries, liquorice and spice aromas. Medium weighted palate showing elegant briary fruit and cedar. Dusty tannins and more juicy fruit to finish.
Winemaker’s NotesHandpicked in early April and given a 4 day cold soak, then fermented as whole berries with indigenous yeasts. Pressed and racked to new (30%) and older French hogsheads. Racked to tank and bottled unfined and unfiltered in mid September 2011.
